Buddhasravaka Bhiksu University had its origin in the historic Buddhasravaka Dharma Pithaya, which was established by an Act of Parliament (No 16 of 1968) for Buddhist monks (Bhikkhus) to study disciplines related to the practice of Buddhism.

 

Buddhasravaka Bhiksu University was established under the Act No.26 of 1996 and began to function from 1st June 1997, as successor to the Buddhasravaka Dharmapithaya.

 

today, the Buddhasravaka Bhiksu University is one of the leading centers of Buddhistic higher learning in Sri Lanka. It is located in the ancient and historic city of Anuradhapura, 206 KM from Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and 138 KM from Kandy, the city where the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined. The city of Anuradhapura was the Capital City of Sri Lanka for over one and a half millennia. It was also the centre of Theravada Buddhism where the Maha Vihara(Great Temple) tradition flourished.
